LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – A JCPS teacher uses her pageant platform to inspire students across Kentucky to try theater. In the classroom, Meyzeek Middle students know her as Mrs. Watkins-Bernard, but she’s Mrs. USA Universe on stage.
Being a theatre kid, KeNiesha Watkins-Bernard understands how the arts can help with public speaking and build confidence, which is why her platform is bringing theatre arts to more schools.
“There’s a place for everyone in theatre,” Watkins-Bernard said.
Watkins-Bernard says her students are supportive of her new title. She believes it will open opportunities to help students learn more about themselves through the arts.
“I like to teach through theatre no matter what the topic is,” Watkins-Bernard said. “We address hard-hitting questions and issues about race, gender, and body image through theatre. Middle school is a tough time for kids, and I believe the stage is a perfect place for them to learn about themselves.”
Watkins-Bernard was crowned earlier this summer in Daytona Beach, Florida. She participated in her first pageant last October. She’s no stranger to the stage. She acted and modeled for 24 years. Her message to other women is to chase your dreams no matter your age.
She will be competing for Mrs. Universe next year.
