USA Hockey Implements New Rule for Neck Protection Following Player’s Tragic Death
In a bold move towards player safety, USA Hockey has announced a new rule that requires all players under the age of 18, as well as on-ice officials and select 19-year-old players, to wear neck laceration protection during games and practices. This change comes after the tragic death of Adam Johnson, who passed away from a neck injury sustained during a game.
The rule, which goes into effect on August 1st, is a crucial step in protecting young athletes and preventing future tragedies. USA Hockey executive director Pat Kelleher stated, “The time is appropriate to modify our rules related to neck laceration protection. We’re also encouraged by the commitment from the hockey industry to improve cut resistant products and create a safer landscape for the game.”
This decision follows in the footsteps of England Ice Hockey, who recently implemented a similar rule after Johnson’s death. The National Hockey League, however, does not currently have a mandate for neck protection for its players.
USA Hockey’s proactive approach sends a strong message that the safety and well-being of players is a top priority. This change is a significant step towards creating a safer environment for young athletes and minimizing the risk of serious injuries.
